The Tumble is a cabinet where the user doesn't have to open the door—gravity does the work!

by Simply by tilting the small wooden lever on top of the Tumble cabinet slightly forward, the door begins to swing open in a subtle and gentle manner. The nice thing is: you don’t expect the door by to open with this simple action, let alone with a graceful, slow “swing”! The movement is surprisingly poetic and a delight to the eye.

The Tumble cabinet was designed by by Koen Devos . Koen has a passion for the simplicity of objects. In his Design , he seeks out big—and sometimes small—unexpected surprises. The inspiration for the Tumble cabinet came, among other things, from the little fences you often see along hiking trails.

“Doors are usually opened with a handle. These handles are sometimes hidden or, conversely, emphasized, but they’re always there. While most cabinets use the same hinges or sliding mechanisms, there are also other ways to open a door. This inspired me to design a cabinet at Design where the user doesn’t have to open the door—gravity does the work!”

The Tumble cabinet has been part of the Vij5 collection since 2015. Whenever we present Vij5 at trade shows and exhibitions, we always keep our eyes open for interesting new Design for the Vij5 collection. The surprising way the Tumble cabinet opens was by spotted by Arjan during Kortrijk Interieur. A few weeks later, the cabinet won a Red Dot Design Award!

After the trade show, we met with Koen to discuss a potential collaboration, which resulted in a New and eye-catching product for our collection. Koen himself by ly crafted the prototypes of the cabinets. Together, we searched for a suitable manufacturer who could efficiently produce the cabinets for us. We also added two small oak shelves to the inside of the cabinet, making it more functional.

The Tumble cabinet is manufactured entirely in Hulst (NL) by a manufacturer that excels at every stage of the process, from raw materials to the final finish. The cabinets are made of MDF and are painted in an automated painting line at colour , after which they are assembled and packaged in-house.

The cabinets are produced in relatively small batches, which means we regularly update the colours.

At our studio in Den Bosch, near the home furnishings district and just two minutes from the A2, everything comes together: showroom, workshop, warehouse, and office. Most of the products from the Vij5 collection are on display here.
