The Tube Cabinet was designed by Maarten Baptist, whose design philosophy centers on creating functional and reproducible items, with a focus on the beauty of simplicity in both form and function. A key aspect of his vision is to keep the production process visible within his designs.

The Tube Cabinet is a perfect example of this approach. The main feature of this modular shelving system is the aluminum tubes that form the structure. While many modular systems require additional parts to attach the shelves to the frame, Maarten took a smart, minimalist approach: by simply cutting a slot into the tube, a seamless connection is created without the need for extra hardware. This method maximizes the tube’s structural potential.

An interesting detail of the cabinet doors is that Maarten applied the same minimalistic approach without compromising functionality. Thanks to the clever design, only one screw is needed for the door hinge. These types of design interventions not only make the cabinet practical but also give it a sense of magical simplicity.

By removing a portion of the tube, I’ve made the connection between the tubes and shelves even more minimalist and robust. This approach harnesses the tube’s strength in the most efficient and constructive way possible. It aligns with my broader design philosophy: simplicity in both form and function, while keeping the production process visible. This gives the Tube Cabinet not only its functionality but also a sense of almost magical logic in its simplicity."

Maarten has had a longstanding passion for industrial tube laser-cutting, a technique that is evident in many of his designs. For example, he previously used this method in the Coatrack by the Meter, where the hooks are directly laser-cut from the tubes rather than being separately attached. This method reduces material waste, resulting in a more sustainable product that is also part of the Vij5 collection. In addition to cabinets and coatracks, Maarten also designs other furniture and even cutlery using this same innovative technique.

The Tube Cabinet has been part of the Vij5 collection since 2024, but was originally designed by Maarten Baptist in 2016 for an exhibition in Milan. Over the years, he refined the system step by step, but a clear path to the consumer was still missing. That changed when we visited his studio and rediscovered this unique design. This led to a brainstorm about a new collaboration, in addition to our successful partnership around the Coatrack by the Meter, and we decided to add the Tube Cabinet to the Vij5 collection.

What especially attracted us was the combination of its refined design and focus on sustainability. Maarten optimizes production processes and strives for minimal waste, which aligns perfectly with our vision of a sustainable future. Furthermore, the customization and flexibility of the design not only inspire creativity but also help reduce waste and extend the lifespan of the products.

Since Maarten had already carried out a significant portion of the development of the Tube Cabinet himself, our role in adding this piece to the Vij5 collection primarily involved refining a few details. What makes this product special is that we can seamlessly produce it in collaboration with the manufacturers in our network, where we always act as the connecting factor.

We focused on perfecting the finishing touches, such as colors and materials, and optimizing the design and production methods to ensure that the Tube Cabinet meets our standards for both quality and functionality. By working with our trusted partners, we bring the design to life in a way that truly fits the Vij5 ethos.

The Tube Cabinet is crafted with care and precision in the Eindhoven region. The metal components of the cabinet are produced by a local metal manufacturer and powder coater. The base of the cabinet consists of square aluminum tubes, from which precise cutouts are made using advanced 3D laser cutting technology. The side panels and doors are made of steel, and are also laser cut and then folded. This process ensures that each piece is perfectly shaped and suited for its intended purpose.

Once produced, the tubes are powder-coated in several standard colors. For larger quantities, custom colors can also be applied to match any interior seamlessly.

The wooden panels are made from FSC-certified oak and are supplied by a Dutch woodworking company that also provides us with custom-made table tops and panels. The finishing touches on these panels are completed in our own workshop in Eindhoven, where we add the final details.

Finally, the panels are prepared for the possible side panels and doors by drilling small holes in the places where the screws and hinges will be placed.
