This mirror is carefully crafted from a stainless steel sheet with a high-gloss finish, which is cut with a laser and then bent twice to create depth. Then the brushed part is finished by hand.
In this way, an industrial stainless steel sheet is transformed into something with more character, while adding or subtracting as little as possible to its original shape. This takes both the usability and character of the material to a higher level.
With this product, designer Theodóra Alfreðsdóttir aims to encourage people to take a greater interest in how things are made. by By helping people understand how everyday objects are made, she hopes to foster greater respect for the materials used and encourage us all to take more responsibility for our choices as consumers.
With its remarkable design, this mirror adds a beautiful graphic element to any interior. The semicircle forms a soft, organic contrast to the straight lines creating a fascinating geometric shape.

Transparency of the production chain comes naturally to us.
For us, that doesn't just mean giving information about where something has been produced. Our chain starts much earlier: with the designer of the product!

DESIGN
The Stainless Steel Mirror was designed by by Icelandic designer Theodóra Alfreðsdóttir. In her London-based design studio, Theodóra works on telling stories by through objects. Through her work, she explores the stories an object can tell and finds ways to express them through the object itself. She is particularly interested in how a product can reveal and document its own manufacturing process.
The Stainless Steel Mirror is a great example of this. The product originated from a challenge Theodóra set for herself by : to transform a mirror-polished stainless steel sheet into something with a little more character, without adding anything to or removing anything from the original form—and thus creating no waste.
She began with simple three-dimensional sketches on paper, which she then translated into high-gloss stainless steel mirrors. To achieve the desired result, Theodóra experimented with the properties of stainless steel sheets. Her goal was to elevate the material to a higher level— by —and to create both functionality and character from the same material. The final design takes advantage of how easily stainless steel sheets can be bent and manipulated. Various surface treatments were also applied to alter the material’s appearance and function.
"My approach to design is to look at processes and make them more transparent or relatable. That then gives the consumer a better understanding of how things are made."
Theodóra Alfreðsdóttir
CURATE
The beautiful Stainless Steel Mirror has been part of the Vij5 collection since 2023. We first met Theodóra in 2018 at the Icelandic design event DesignMarch in her hometown of Reykjavik. We were here at the invitation of DesignMarch and the Iceland University of the Arts to give a talk for students and to participate in 'DesignMatch'. This initiative brings together local designers and international design producers for a series of short meetings. It’s matchmaking for design professionals, and Theodóra was one of our 'matches'!
We had a nice conversation about her work and portfolio and were immediately big fans of her design language. Since then we've kept in touch regularly and behind the scenes, we made an effort to get two other projects from her portfolio production ready for the Vij5 collection. Because these projects unfortunately stranded during the development process (yes, that happens regularly!) we are now super happy and proud to be able to add this work of Theodóra to the Vij5 collection.
“Our home is filled with beautiful objects, and I think the story of how they came to be is just as fascinating as the final result.”
Theodóra Alfreðsdóttir
In 2022 Theodóra presented her Stainless Steel Mirrors for the first time at DesignMarch and although we had never seen the mirror in real life, only images online, we were immediately in love with this particular product. Its graphic look appeals to us and so does the whole story behind it, intended to make people more aware of our material world.
Originally, Theodóra came up with three variants of the mirror, in three different colors. Only the 'semicircle' variant in silver is currently part of the Vij5 collection. (The other variants are available in limited editions directly through Theodóra).
TRANSLATE
Theodóra had already done a great deal of research on this product herself in her London studio and had experience creating a small series for her presentation during DesignMarch in Iceland. The challenge for us was to find a good, suitable local manufacturer here in the Netherlands who would be able to produce this product in larger quantities with high precision. We also worked with Theodóra to further develop the back of the mirror. We designed a wooden hanging system that also ensures the stainless steel plate remains more stable and is less likely to warp, keeping the mirror nice and flat. This also makes it very easy to hang the mirror using one or more screws.
CREATE
The Stainless Steel Mirror is manufactured in the Eindhoven region. For the final design, Theodóra combined two types of stainless steel finishes (high-gloss and brushed) and took advantage of the ease with which stainless steel can be bent.
The high-gloss finish of the stainless steel sheet is the starting point for this product. First, the shape of the mirror is laser-cut and bent twice at by , our metal fabricator. Next, the matte section is very carefully sanded by hand in the workshop at Vij5. Then, the wooden hanging system—which is also made from poplar plywood in the workshop at Vij5 —is attached to the mirror using a special mirror adhesive.
In the material passport you can find where and by whom the different parts of this product are made.
