As the moon orbits the Earth, it reveals itself to us in various forms. The Moonrise Mirror is a round mirror inspired by the different phases of the moon and their graphic representation.

The mirror is split into two ‘hemispheres’, made of a combination of clear and coloured mirror glass.

The back of the mirror features a handmade solid oak ring and offers a simple design for hanging the mirror in any desired position, depending on the user's mood and needs.

The Moonrise Mirror was designed by by Danish designer Michael Funch. His Design are simple and honest, inspired by by raw materials and the manufacturing process. He uses design as a tool to gain insight into what we can do with what we have.

Because the angle at which the moonby is illuminated by the sun changes relative to the angle at which it is viewed from Earth, the moon appears (partly) illuminated and (partly) dark when seen from Earth. This marks the seasons and the passing of the month. This phenomenon and its graphic representation formed the basis for the design of the Moonrise Mirror.

The balance between light and dark in the lunar cycle marks a time of growth and a new beginning when the moon is in its “first quarter.” At this point, the moon is exactly half-lit and will continue to grow fuller from here on. This phase symbolizes the spring season. In the mirror, this phase is represented by the colour green.

The “last quarter” represents the beginning of the end of the cycle, during which old structures are broken down and the way is prepared for new ones: autumn. At this point, too, the moon is exactly half-lit, but from here on it will grow increasingly darker. In the mirror, this phase is represented by the “ colour ” copper.

The Moonrise Mirror has been part of the Vij5 collection since 2015. We’ve known Michael since his college days, when he worked as an intern for Vij5 . The Moonrise Mirror project originated during his internship. After he graduated from the Design Academy Eindhoven, we worked with Michael and our wood manufacturer to further develop the mirror into a market-ready product.

All components of the Moonrise Mirror are manufactured by by various suppliers in the Netherlands. The components are shipped to Vij5, after which the product is further finished, assembled, and packaged at our facility.

At our studio in Den Bosch, near the home furnishings district and just two minutes from the A2, everything comes together: showroom, workshop, warehouse, and office. Most of the products from the Vij5 collection are on display here.
