Moonrise
Mirror

As the moon revolves around the earth, it shows itself to us in different guises. The Moonrise Mirror is a round mirror inspired by the different phases of the moon and the graphic translation of these phases.

The mirror is split into two ‘hemispheres’, made of a combination of clear and coloured mirror glass.

The back of the mirror is a handmade solid oak ring and offers a simple construction to hang the mirror in any position to suit the mood and needs of the user.

Transparency of the production chain comes naturally to us.

For us, that doesn't just mean giving information about where something has been produced. Our chain starts much earlier: with the designer of the product!

DESIGN

The Moonrise Mirror is designed by Danish designer Michael Funch. His Design is simple and honest, inspired by raw materials and the process of making them. He uses design as a tool to understand what we can do with what we have.

Because the angle at which the moon is shone upon by the sun changes, compared to the angle at which it is viewed from the earth, the moon, as seen from the earth, is sometimes (partly) illuminated and sometimes (partly) dark. This marks the seasons and the end of the month. This phenomenon and its graphic translation was the basis for the design of the Moonrise Mirror.

Michael Funch

"For the design of the Moonrise Mirror, I was inspired by the different phases of the moon," says Mr. K.

Michael Funch

The balance of light and dark in the moon cycle defines a time of growth and a new start with the moon in the 'first quarter'. The moon is then exactly half lit and will become fuller and fuller from here. This phase is symbolic of the spring season. In the mirror this phase is translated with the colour green.

The 'last quarter' represents the beginning of the end of the cycle where old structures are broken down and the way is prepared for new structures: autumn. The moon is exactly half lit, but from here on it will get darker and darker. In the mirror this phase is translated into the colour copper.

CURATE & TRANSLATE

The Moonrise Mirror has been part of the Vij5 collection since 2015. We know Michael since his studies because he worked as an intern for Vij5 . The Moonrise Mirror project originated during his internship period. After his graduation at the Design Academy Eindhoven we further developed the mirror together with Michael and in cooperation with our wood producer into a saleable product.

"We rarely meet people with a personal design philosophy so close to ours, but Michael is one of them!"
