Stainless
Steel
Mirror

This mirror is carefully crafted from a stainless steel sheet with a high-gloss finish, which is cut with a laser and then bent twice to create depth. Then the brushed part is finished by hand.

In this way, an industrial stainless steel sheet is transformed into something with more character, while adding or subtracting as little as possible to its original shape. This takes both the usability and character of the material to a higher level.

With this product, designer Theodóra Alfreðsdóttir wants to encourage people to become more interested in how things are made. By understanding how everyday things are made, she hopes that there will be more respect for the materials used and that we will all take more responsibility for our choices as consumers.

With its remarkable design, this mirror adds a beautiful graphic element to any interior. The semicircle forms a soft, organic contrast to the straight lines creating a fascinating geometric shape.

Transparency of the production chain comes naturally to us.

For us, that doesn't just mean giving information about where something has been produced. Our chain starts much earlier: with the designer of the product!

DESIGN

The Stainless Steel Mirror was designed by Icelandic designer Theodóra Alfreðsdóttir. At her design studio in London, Theodóra works on telling stories through objects. Her work explores the stories an object can tell and finds ways to express them through the object itself. In doing so, she is interested in how a product can show and document its own manufacturing process.

The Stainless Steel Mirror is a great example of this. The product was created from a challenge set by Theodóra herself to transform a mirror-polished stainless steel plate into something with a little more character, without adding to, or taking away from the original form - and thus not creating waste.

She began with simple three-dimensional sketches from paper, which she then translated into high-gloss stainless steel mirrors. To achieve the desired result, Theodóra experimented with the properties of stainless steel sheets. Her goal was to take the material to the next level by creating usability as well as character from the same material. The final design takes advantage of the ease with which stainless steel sheets can be bent and manipulated. Various surface treatments were also applied to change the appearance and function of the material.

Theodóra Alfreðsdóttir

"My approach to design is to look at processes and make them more transparent or relatable. That then gives the consumer a better understanding of how things are made."

CURATE

The beautiful Stainless Steel Mirror has been part of the Vij5 collection since 2023. We first met Theodóra in 2018 at the Icelandic design event DesignMarch in her hometown of Reykjavik. We were here at the invitation of DesignMarch and the Iceland University of the Arts to give a talk for students and to participate in 'DesignMatch'. This initiative brings together local designers and international design producers for a series of short meetings. It’s matchmaking for design professionals, and Theodóra was one of our 'matches'!

We had a nice conversation about her work and portfolio and were immediately big fans of her design language. Since then we've kept in touch regularly and behind the scenes, we made an effort to get two other projects from her portfolio production ready for the Vij5 collection. Because these projects unfortunately stranded during the development process (yes, that happens regularly!) we are now super happy and proud to be able to add this work of Theodóra to the Vij5 collection.

"Our home environment is filled with beautiful objects and I think the story of how they came about is just as fascinating as the final result."

Theodóra Alfreðsdóttir

In 2022 Theodóra presented her Stainless Steel Mirrors for the first time at DesignMarch and although we had never seen the mirror in real life, only images online, we were immediately in love with this particular product. Its graphic look appeals to us and so does the whole story behind it, intended to make people more aware of our material world.

Originally, Theodóra came up with three variants of the mirror, in three different colors. Only the 'semicircle' variant in silver is currently part of the Vij5 collection. (The other variants are available in limited editions directly through Theodóra).

TRANSLATE

Theodóra herself had already done a lot of research for this product in her studio in London and also already had the experience of making a small series for her presentation at DesignMarch in Iceland. The challenge for us was to find a good and suitable producer locally here in the Netherlands who would be able to make this product with high precision in a more serial way. We also further developed the back of the mirror together with Theodóra. We designed a wooden suspension system, which also directly ensures that the stainless steel plate remains a bit more stable and less likely to deform so that the mirror stays nice and flat. It also makes it very easy to hang the mirror by one or more screws.

CREATE

The Stainless Steel Mirror is made in the Eindhoven area. For the final design, Theodóra combined two types of surface treatments of stainless steel (high gloss and brushed) and took advantage of the ease with which stainless steel can be bent.

The high-gloss finish of the stainless steel sheet is the starting point of this product. To begin with, the shape of the mirror is cut with a laser and set twice by our metal producer. Then the matte part is very carefully sanded by hand in the workshop of Vij5. Then the wooden suspension system, which is also made in the workshop of Vij5 from poplar plywood, is attached to the mirror with a special mirror glue.

In the material passport you can find where and by whom the different parts of this product are made.
