The Copper Lights are created by by ly folding a thin sheet of copper to form stable structures. The folding technique defines both the shape and the aesthetics of the lamps, resulting in a delicate yet refined collection.

by As the surroundings are reflected in the shiny copper surfaces, each facet takes on its own hue—ranging from dark brown to red and orange. The copper lends a warm glow to the light. The Copper Lights are available in three different shapes and also in brass or beech wood veneer versions, making them highly versatile for interior design.

The Brass Lights are a variation on the copper version and are produced in the same way, but using a brass sheet as the base material. by As the surroundings are reflected in the lamp, each facet takes on its own unique hue—ranging from dark gold to yellow and beige. Unlike the copper version, the material gives the light a bright, slightly yellow colour .

The Wooden Light is another version, made of beech wood veneer. It is laser-cut and glued together with the same precision as the copper and brass versions. The backing behind the veneer serves not only as a support but also as a hinge, allowing the veneer to bend where it would normally break. The white interior provides a beautiful, “neutral” light distribution. (Note: The Wooden Light is available in one variant: WL25.)

The Copper Lights were designed by David Derksen . The lamps are a further development of his graduation project, “Copper Cabinet”—a delicate cabinet for storing small, valuable possessions—which he created using a similar technique.

Nature—and especially the principles and processes found in nature—are David’s primary sources of inspiration. This results in a strong focus on materials, how they behave, and how they can be constructed.

Ever since we co-hosted with David at the (almost legendary) Autofficina expo in Milan in 2010—where he first presented his Copper Lights—we’ve been intrigued by by this lamp series. Because the production of these lamps involves a great deal of handcrafting, we actually consider them more like works of art. We’re very proud that these unique lamps have been part of the Vij5 collection since 2014!

David made the first lamps himself in his own studio. As a true perfectionist, he then continued to refine the lamps by in collaboration with a model maker, until he was completely satisfied. He also created two versions of the lamp using brass and beech wood veneer. The model maker, based in Eindhoven, still produces the lamps by hand with complete dedication.

The Copper Lights are made from a 0.3mm-thick copper sheet. The various components are etched from this sheet. This precise technique is also used to mark the bend lines in the material, after which the pieces are folded by hand and assembled in Eindhoven.

Although, in our opinion, these lamps should be viewed more as works of art, the Copper Lights CL-16, CL-25, and CL-30, as well as the Brass Lights BL-16, BL-25, and BL-30, meet the guidelines for CE certification under the Low Voltage Directive (2006/95/EC) and comply with the standards NEN-EN-ISO 12100:2010 and NEN 1010:2007.

Copper and brass naturally oxidize under the influence of air and moisture. Therefore, over time the lamps will darken and develop a patina. This is part of the design, they only get more beautiful!

In the movie *Ex Machina*, the Copper Lights are part of the film set!

In the 2015 film, a neurotic tech billionaire creates an artificially intelligent humanoid robot at his country house in the woods.

Normally, the country house is the Juvet Landscape Hotel in Valldal, Norway.
